Activists in New York City distrupt George Bush, say
'NOT ONE MORE LYNCHING'

Today, two members of the International Action Center disrupted George Bush while 100 people demonstrated outside as the Conservative Party held a $500-per-plate lunch.

This demonstration followed one Monday in Baltimore, where activists remained vigilant in protest of Bush's execution of Shaka Sankofa (Gary Graham).

Signs held in the disruption and at the demonstration read:

  • George Bush executed an innocent man: Gary Graham/Shaka Sankofa,
  • Gary Graham/Shaka Sankofa: lynched for the crime of being Black,
  • We remember Gary Graham's/Shaka Sankofa's last words: 'Abolish the racist death penalty,' and
  • Bush: racist, anti-poor, anti-woman.

Groups organizing for the demonstration included the National Organization of Women, the International Action Center, NARAL, Housing Works, the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, and Disabled in Action.

IAC activists Judi Cheng and Scott Scheffer waited until Bush began his speech, then held up signs and began chanting "George Bush executed an innocent man: Gary Graham, End the racist death penalty." They were roughly moved out of the room by secret service agents. The activists joined demonstrators outside.

Cheng said, "We refuse to let George Bush get away with this legal lynching of Shaka Sankofa/Gary Graham, who the whole world knew to be innocent.
We will avenge Shaka's murder by intensifying our struggle against the death penalty, for a new trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal, and against this whole racist system.

Everyone here today represents hundreds and thousands of young and working people who are organizing this summer to rock the Republican Convention in Philadelphia and the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles to tell both of the parties of big business 'Not one more lynching.'"
